Senior/Lead Data Engineer

We are looking for a Senior/Lead Data Engineer with at least five years of experience and a strong focus on cloud-native solutions, data architecture, and scalable data platforms.

This is a hybrid role based in Lisbon, requiring two days per week on-site and three days working remotely. You will design and evolve end-to-end data solutions covering ingestion, modelling, storage, orchestration, governance, and monitoring. The role also involves making key technical decisions, improving platform performance and reliability, and supporting the development of mid-level and junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

Design and evolve end-to-end data architectures covering ingestion, modelling, storage, and orchestration.

Build scalable cloud-native data solutions using Microsoft technologies or comparable services from other cloud providers.

Develop and optimise data pipelines, data warehousing solutions, and data lake environments.

Define technical standards and promote strong DataOps and engineering practices.

Implement data validation, lineage, documentation, monitoring, and governance at scale.

Optimise pipelines and storage solutions for performance, cost efficiency, and reliability.

Evaluate architectural trade-offs and make clear, defensible technical decisions.

Translate complex engineering decisions into clear explanations for technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Mentor mid-level and junior engineers and support the adoption of engineering standards.

Break down complex or ambiguous requirements into clear, actionable technical plans.

Anticipate operational and architectural risks and contribute to the long-term evolution of the data platform.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

5+ years of professional experience in Data Engineering or a similar role.

Strong experience in end-to-end data architecture and design, including ingestion, modelling, storage, and orchestration.

Knowledge of architectural approaches such as Medallion Architecture.

Strong experience with cloud-native data engineering.

Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, or Azure Synapse.

Experience with comparable data services in AWS or Google Cloud is also relevant.

Hands-on experience with data warehousing and data lake solutions such as BigQuery, Azure Data Lake, Delta Lake, or Amazon Redshift.

Proficiency in Python, SQL, or Spark.

Experience with Python data libraries and tools such as Pandas or Boto3.

Strong knowledge of relational database management systems such as Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server.

Experience with NoSQL or analytical databases such as MongoDB, Elasticsearch, or Google BigQuery.

Experience with DevOps and DataOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines.

Ability to implement data validation, lineage, documentation, and monitoring at scale.

Proven ability to optimise pipelines and storage solutions for performance, cost, and reliability.

Leadership and Collaboration Skills

Ability to evaluate trade-offs and make well-supported technical decisions.

Ability to explain complex engineering topics clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

Experience mentoring mid-level and junior engineers.

Ability to promote standards and foster a collaborative technical culture.

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to turn ambiguity into clear, actionable steps.

Gross annual salary: €30,000–€35,000*, depending on experience and suitability for the role.
