Principal Python Engineer

At Remote Crew, we’re partnering with an international product-driven company looking for a Principal Python Engineer to join their growing engineering team.

They’re looking for a highly experienced Python Engineer with 12+ years of experience, strong expertise in Retail environments, and the ability to contribute at a high level to technical and architectural decisions.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll combine deep Python expertise with system design, technical decision-making and collaboration with different stakeholders. You’ll work on systems that differ from traditional deterministic applications, requiring strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think beyond straightforward implementation.

Location: Remote (Portugal)

What You’ll Do

- Design, develop and evolve scalable backend systems using Python

- Contribute to software architecture and technical decisions across the product

- Translate business and product requirements into high-level technical solutions

- Evaluate different technical approaches and make decisions based on scalability, reliability and long-term impact

- Work closely with Product and other stakeholders to understand requirements and define appropriate technical solutions

- Build and improve systems in a Retail environment, considering complex and evolving business requirements

- Develop APIs and backend services using FastAPI

- Work with Azure cloud services and AKS

- Contribute to infrastructure and deployment practices using Terraform

- Ensure systems are scalable, resilient and maintainable

- Remain hands-on with implementation while also providing technical direction to other engineers

- Identify technical risks and proactively propose improvements

- Help shape engineering practices and technical standards across the team

What We’re Looking For

- 12+ years of experience as a Python Engineer

- Strong and proven experience working within the Retail industry

- Deep expertise in Python

- Strong experience with FastAPI or similar modern Python frameworks

- Solid experience with Azure

- Hands-on experience with AKS / Kubernetes

- Experience with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code

- Strong understanding of software architecture and system design

- Proven experience making or owning technical and architectural decisions

- Ability to evaluate multiple approaches and clearly explain technical trade-offs

- Strong problem-solving skills, particularly when dealing with complex or non-deterministic systems

- Ability to work at both a high-level architectural/conceptual level and remain hands-on with code

- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with Product and other stakeholders

- Proactive mindset and strong ownership

Nice to Have

- Experience with CI/CD

- Experience working in fast-paced product environments

- Experience leading technical initiatives or mentoring other engineers

- Experience working with highly distributed or complex systems

- Experience making technology choices and defining technical standards across teams
